Dr. Richard Leonard, Former Interim MinisterAs Interim Minister during 2004-2005, let me offer a few words about the ministries of Union Congregational Church. The pastor shares in these ministries with a dedicated congregation led by a Council of Elders, Diaconate, and other church boards and groups.

Union Congregational’s church life embraces four main emphases. We’re a worshiping church, a teaching church, a sharing church and a caring church.

The most important ministry of any congregation is its service to the Lord in worship and praise. Worship is our joyful response to the new life God has given us through his Son Jesus Christ. At Union Congregational we believe worship should be both dignified and Spirit-filled, in keeping with the majesty of the living God himself. While you might call our worship style more “traditional” than “contemporary,” it’s always warmed by the sense of God’s presence in the midst of his people.

Adult Sunday School ClassThen, because our ministry is centered in the Word of God, we emphasize Christian teaching. Our Sunday morning messages are always a “witness to the Word,” and the Bible is the basis for our entire Christian education program involving children, youth and adults. We take the Scriptures seriously as the primary source for understanding who God is and how he wants us to live, both as individual worshipers and as a church.

Then, a Christian congregation is called to share the good news of God’s love in Christ, in keeping with Jesus’ words: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Union Congregational Council of EldersUnion Congregational gives back ten percent of its income for the world mission of the Christian church. Our congregation regularly supports 24 missionary causes and organizations, and promotes the application of biblical principles in the life of our community and nation.

And we’re called to care for to those in need — to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Our caring extends beyond our church family to others in need in community and world. We’re focused on prayer for healing, financial blessing, amendment of life or spiritual direction. I can’t tell you about all the loving deeds that are done for those in need, some of which are known only to the helper and the helped. We try to undergird the spiritual growth of our church family through opportunities for Christian education and fellowship.

It was my privilege to serve Christ together with this congregation in the role of Interim Minister from July 2004 till June 2005. On June 26, 2005, the Rev. Mark C. Alvis assumed his duties as pastor of Union Congregational Church.

Grace and peace,
Dr. Richard Leonard
